Hope everyone had a great Independence Day that lives in the United States. Today's blog is quick and short, just wanted to give you something to think about.
We have all heard that leadership is about influence, it is about influence and a lot more, but definitely influence is very important. In the military they require you to trust your leadership really fast, like day one. When I was in the military my soldiers had to trust me from the first day they met me. So I learned to do three things to establish trust very quickly with my soldiers. The first thing I did was to ask as much as possible about them and their families. The more you know about a person the more you can gauge their motivation for working, what their triggers are. This will also allow you to know upfront some of the challenges they may face in the future. When I asked more about them in that first meeting, more than I told them what I expected from them, they felt like I cared and saw them more than just a soldier, but a part of the team. The second thing I did was create an environment where they could ask any question they wanted. When you give your team an opportunity to ask questions it leads to clarity and confidence. Even when a person doesn't agree with a decision, at least they know they had an opportunity to be heard. Lastly, I tried to always praise my team in front of their peers, not only in private. Everyone likes to be praised for doing a good job. So as much as possible in our team meetings I would celebrate someone's efforts. What are some ways you increase your influence with your team. In an interview with Peter Guber, author of Tell To Win, Hall of Famer Coach Pat Riley made the following observation, "There is a difference between having a good game and having game excellence." He went on to talk about how players like Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and Larry Bird had game excellence. Those players turned in excellent games night after night. Their game excellence started in practice, yes Allen Iverson, practice. To be a winner in life, and a person that experiences victory after victory, you must Plan, Prepare and Perform to win everyday. Have you ever observed that you PRACTICE more hours than the game itself? I invest hours some time crafting a one hour presentation. Winning takes a will to do the little things over and over and over again, every day. Building momentum and gaining expertise in what you are doing. I have a little saying with my clients, I tell them to commit to MSID, "Make Small Improvements Daily." I live by the training philosophy, every day I'm training, so at the end of each day, I review my training to correct, improve and enforce what I have done right or wrong. So today commit to MSID and daily reviews of your activities. Dr. Will Author, Genius Potential America's #1 Leadership Life Trainer P.S. We are having a 48 Hour Success Sale!!! Success Store One of the questions I'm always asked is "How do I stay motivated?" The answer is, you can not. Motivation is something that last at the most for 72 hours. So that means you need to develop a "Motivational Tool Box."
I tell you about that later, but first let me give you a few tips as well on how to get the most from your time. Each of us have peek performing hours where we feel the most energized, you need to identify yours. I work best when the house is quiet. So I like to wake up early in the morning and get my most important task done. The next thing you need to learn to do is finish projects that you are really not excited about FIRST. When you are your most energized you need to do the task that sap your energy, because you need more fuel to finish those task. And lastly, work in time frames. I give each project a time frame and when that time is up I leave it alone. I take a 10 to 15 minute brake and start to work on another project. This allows me to take a step back and when I return to the project I am fresh. Hope these little tips help. Now for your "Motivational Tool Box." With all the little gadgets we have now, it is very easy to create a MTB. On my iPhone I have podcast, books and music that motivate me. All in one place I can get some motivation. Before I get ready to tackle a project I blast my favorite song. I love listening to Jim Rohn and Les Brown so I have them on the ready. I allow them to talk to me when I feel like given up or I'm tired. Out of nowhere I hear "YOU GOT TO BE HUNGRY or DON'T ASK FOR IT TO BE EASIER." Pumps me up every time and gives me that extra boost I need. So find your times when you are most energized, start with the projects you least want to do and work in time frames. Be sure to create you an awesome "Motivational Tool Box" today. Yesterday I profiled Dr. George C. Fraser of FraserNet, the largest African-American professional networking association. If you didn’t read yesterday’s blog, go ahead and read it, Dr. Fraser shared some great points on building relationships. One of the great thinkers I admire is Dr. Dennis Kimbro, author of What Makes the Great Great and Think and Grow Rich A Black Choice. I have been a student of Dr. Kimbro’s for years. In 2011 I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Kimbro twice. In our two conversations Dr. K shared some powerful ideas about reshaping our lives and building a successful life. Dr. K graduated from college and didn’t want to take the normal course that many of his college classmates were taking. There were two burning questions that he wanted to answer; 1. Why are some people successful and others are not 2. What makes the great great, what are the principals they live by This led him to begin research to answer these two questions. He started by interviewing successful business persons around the United States. He was contacted by the Napoleon Hill Organization to complete a book started by Napoleon Hill that explored successful African-American professionals. The conclusion was the book Think and Grow Rich a Black Choice. Dr. Kimbro shared with me that this seven year process was a process of determination, tough will, tears, heartache and pain. Five times he almost lost his home, two cars were repossessed and his lights turned off several times. With a wife and small children to support, he wanted to quit several times, but he knew if he could finish the project, his life and his family’s life would change forever. Here are some key take a ways from my two talks with Dr. Kimbro: 1. You must be committed to finishing what you start 2. Lean on your faith in times of doubt 3. Change your associations if they are not helping you grow 4. Be committed to your family 5. Set goals that will make you expand in life I always have a great time talking with Dr. K, he always has great insights to share with me. Hopefully these insights will help you on your journey.
