"We are all equal in time, but separated by what we do with our time." No matter who you are, no matter how wealthy you are, or how good looking you are, you cannot get or buy more time. Therefore, TIME is your most valuable asset. The number one thing that has set me a part is how I invest my time. I read a book on time management years ago by Brian Tracy, entitled "Time Power." The book is filled with masterful time management principals that will help you create more effective time investment habits. Here are Brian's 7 Tools for Personal Organization:
Implement these tools into your daily routine to maximize your time and efforts. Your advantage in life and the market place will be determined in how you invest your time. Invest it wisely on the most important task during the day and you will reap a better harvest. Squander your time and you will have a life full of regrets. Take a sheet of paper and do a time inventory. For three days, write on a sheet of paper 12:00am-12:00am, a 24 hour period, track what you did every hour. Review each night where you wasted time. This is a laborious task that will transform your life. What you will discover like I did when I did this years ago, where valuable time is being wasted each day. As a quick example, what do you do while you drive to work, or ride the subway. Do you just drive or ride, or do you invest this time to listen to audios or read books that will make you better. I watch many people become frustrated while waiting in line. This never happens to me, because I use my Smart Phone to get smarter. I simply listen to an audio while I stand there for those 20 minutes. So it turned into a learning session, instead of wasted time in the line. Take control of your life, by taking control of your time. Lastly, here are 3 quotes I enjoyed from Brian's book: "Action without planning is the reason for every failure." Peter Drucker "The top 3 percent of high achievers are all persistent, continuous planners." Brian Tracy "Success is a process of diverting one's scattered forces into one powerful channel." I have had the pleasure of living in Europe for 14 years and traveling around the world. Working with diverse people and organizations has given me I think a very unique way of looking at my own leadership and how I view certain situations. Taking advice from Stephen Covey's book the 7th Habits of Highly Effective People, I try to always seek to understand, rather than to be understood. Because of my vast traveling I do a lot of reading on cultures, customs and try to gather information on the places and people I will encounter. This has allowed me to stay sharp and learn that there is more than one way to think about a situation or endeavor. In my opinion most leaders are not good because of two things. The first is they stop learning and developing, and the second is they have a narrow mind. The two walk hand in hand and result in poor leadership. DANGER #1: LACK OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT I am a huge champion for personal development, I think it is the great equalizer in life. It has meant so much to me and the progression in my life. Jim Rohn the great life philosopher would always say "Education will make you a living, self development will make you a fortune." This is not only true monetarily, but I believe you will experience life better as well when you constantly develop. I tell leaders that I lead that growth is not an option for a leader that wants to be around for a long time. We are wired to produce in life, but you cannot produce at the level you are capable of, if you do not grow and develop. A few things happen when you don't grow.
DANGER #2: BEING NARROW MINDED Achieving goals and producing results at high levels require that you have a wealth of knowledge available to you. Companies like McDonald's, Starbucks and Microsoft that operate around the world must be led by individuals that have a world view. These leaders must possess a global view. Because of a lack of personal development, many leaders have a narrow view of leadership, systems and operations and cannot survive in a task or position that require a depth of insight. It is very difficult to grow and learn if you think you have arrived. I like to consider myself a sponge, so I ask a lot of questions, I heard someone say, we have two ears and one mouth, because we should listen more than we talk. Learning how to relate to different cultures and traditions have made me a far better leader than if I looked at everything from my own experiences and knowledge base. Being narrow minded leads to the following:
As a leader commit to continued personal growth. The Japanese have a single word for "constant and never-ending improvement" and it's called "Kaizen." Kaizen is from the Japanese words Kai and Zen where "kai" means change and "zen" means good. One of the great biblical writers the Apostle Paul made the following statement: "To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some." 1 Corithians 9:22 Paul didn't have a narrow mind, he was well educated and knew that his effectiveness was tied to his ability to engage from a wide perspective, with a single focus. I recently shared the stage with Brad Casper, the recent former President of the Phoenix Suns, and he shared with me his experience of working in Japan earlier in his career. Once lesson that he took away was the feeling of being a minority, from the aspect that he was usually the tallest person and usually the only American in many of his business meetings in Japan. This helped him develop a sensitivity in his leadership toward others that were in a minority group of any kind. As a leader, you want to have a wide perspective, with a single focus. Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined. Henry David Thoreau I tell my clients all the time that life at its longest is short, so lead the life you love. So many people struggle through life unfulfilled, wishing and hoping it will be better. But that is no strategy for living the Genius Life, your Best Life. Stephen Covey reminded us to begin with the end in mind. I say ask yourself what pictures do you want in your life album, pictures of regret, could've, should've or would've. I know for me, I want pictures with great memories of time invested with family and friends. Pictures of me doing what I love. And also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor—it is the gift of God. Ecclesiastes 3:13 Enjoying life is truly an individual responsibility, you cannot delegate this task to anyone else. Never place anyone else in charge of you enjoying life, at the end of the day, it's your duty to lead the life you love. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy life: 1. Create a list of all the dream locations you would like to visit and go. 2. Write down a list of people you would really like to invest more time with and do it. 3. Come up with one major goal you want to pursue and pursue it. 4. Protect your time and space, and only allow the good in. 5. Do something radical to create an awesome memory, do it this weekend. Life is short, so get to living, because at the end of the day, it's your fault either way!!! As we stood in line, our faces looking strait forward, scared to blink for fear of what might happen. Motionless in the hot Kentucky sun, three of the biggest men I had every seen came walking toward the group of young boys from around the country. Then the shouting started, "Grab your bags, get on the bus, move it! Move it! You are moving to slow!" This was the first day of my Army Bootcamp. Those three Drill Sergeants barking orders. Each of them over six feet tall and ripped with muscles. I can't remember their names, I just remember they yelled a lot that day. But one Drill Sergeant I do remember was maybe 5'6, DS Valdez. He never screamed or yelled, he would simply walk up to you and whisper in your ear.... "I know you can do better than that, I believe you can do better than that, you are going to do better than that, and I'm going to help you. Get down and give me some push-ups." Then he would reach down as you were doing those push-ups and say "I care to much about you to let you fail." In his book Love Works, Joel Manby makes the case that you can be a leader that loves, shows compassion and respects those that you lead. A former auto industry executive, Joel recounts a time in the book when his boss called him up on Easter Sunday, demanded he get on a plane and travel to Europe to meet with him. Joel says when he arrived, the boss embarrassed him in front of his peers because sells were slow in his division. That particular quarter Joel experienced low numbers for the first time in his career. But for Joel, what was more disheartening, was the way his boss treated him. Joel says he decided that day, never to be a leader like that, and that it had to be a better way to lead and get results. I whole heartily agree. If you ever get the opportunity to lead a person, team, or organization, it should always be deemed a privilege and not a right. The world renowned leadership expert Dr. John C. Maxwell says "Most leaders never leave level one of leadership, which is people follow you because of your position or title." In other words the only reason they are listening to you is because they have to, not because they feel like you have something to say. I don't know Joel personally, but the wealth of knowledge he shares in the book is priceless. If you ever wondered if there is another way to lead other than authoritative, micro-management or bullying, this is a great book. Joel makes the case, that showing compassion doesn't mean you neglect standards or lead from the clouds and over look poor performance. But because you love and genuinely care for people, you will help them to become better, which is the role of leadership. If you really want to see how to lead correctly and become an effective leader, read this book, Love Works by Joel Manby. You know my philosophy that everyone is a leader, but many times we forget that we have a duel role as followers as well. For order and structure someone or team of decision makers have to have the final say on decision making. So even though you are a leader, in many situations you may not have the final say on many decisions. So how can you develop confidence in decisions that you do not have final say. I call it the power of the question. Through asking the right questions you can gain valuable insight on why decisions are being made, see the perspective of the leader or team making the decision and get a better understanding. This allows buy-in on the followers part. In my experience here are some great initial questions to ask. What Is The Vision? This should be asked in the early stages of joining an organization, church, business, or any endeavor. The lead person, or your immediate supervisor should be able to clearly answer this question. The answer to this question brings clarity to what the organization is wanting to accomplish. Think of it like this, when you are enrolled in college you meet with a guidance counselor and they let you know how each course is helping you achieve the goal of graduating. They may recommend you become involved in extra activities, but these activities are not helping you graduate, but helping you enjoy the experience of being in college. If a leader cannot answer this question the organization is in trouble for two reasons. Number one, without a vision, people, resources and time are wasted. Number two, a leader without a vision is blind, and you will fall into a situation of the blind leading the blind. How Do I Fit In The Bigger Picture? I think this is a critical question to ask. Knowing how you fit in the bigger picture will give you a sense of meaning and purpose. A recent survey of top executives stated that most executives leave a position because they don't feel a sense of meaning or connection to the organization's goals. No matter where you may work, or what department you are in, you need to know how what you do helps the company succeed. Think about a basketball team, every person evolved with the team matters. From the person recording stats to the trainer. That is why everyone receives a championship ring. I remember reading that one professional team purchased a ring for everyone in the organization, from the janitor to the the President of the organization. I always say success is a team sport. How Can I Make Your Job Easier? Over 80% of workers become pretty proficient at their daily task in a short while. This affords them extra time. What do must employees do with this time? Surf the web, play games on the computer or complain that there is nothing to do. How could this time be used in a better way? By asking your supervisor is there anything I can help you with. Lead Followers do not say "I'm only going to do what I get paid to do." This type of attitude cripples the entire company. You should always be thinking like a Lead Leader. So the next time you find yourself with extra time, help the organization succeed further, you just might be securing your employment . When you ask these three essential questions, they put you in a powerful position as a Lead Follower. I know some of you are going to say, my job or organization has not created an environment for asking questions. Then the next question needs to be, how long can you be happy in an environment like that. Dr. Will Moreland Author, Genius Potential America's #1 Leadership Life Trainer P.S. Please take a moment to vote for me for Small Business Influencer Award "Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning." Benjamin Franklin Fulfillment in life and business comes from growth and progress toward your life's mission and vision. I haven't met a person that was happy with a lack of growth in their life. The same is true for every business owner and employee. Growth is essential for meaning. Jim Rohn the brilliant business philosopher would always instruct to "Check for Results." Ask yourself, are you on track or off track? Growth is an indicator of a healthy, vibrant and cultivated environment. As a leader, your responsibility is to help create, monitor and encourage growth. So ensure you are not doing the following three things that kill growth. LACK OF VISION The proverb teaches that "Where there is no vision, the people will perish." Vision is a critical element of growth, vision gives direction, focus and provides motivation. As a leader you have to cast the vision for the organization, over see the implementation of the vision and constantly communicate the vision. EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION Most leaders think that when they speak, they are automatically understood and everyone is on board with what has been communicated. Life is full of changes, and changes require communication. If you are a leader that doesn't like to communicate or feel you don't need to communicate changes or obstacles within the organization, you are killing growth. You leave the team to assume, guess or even gossip about what is going on. This type of behavior stunts growth. MICRO-MANAGEMENT James Cash Penny, founder of J.C. Penney retail chain said "The surest way for an executive to kill himself is to refuse to learn how, and when, and to whom to delegate work." No farmer plants a seed and watches over it all day. The farmer will water, observe from a far, and protect the seed from the birds. The farmer knows it must trust the process or system that is in place. This frees the farmer to make plans for the harvest. Every employee needs to feel trusted by their leader. Leaders that have confidence within their own ability will not desire to micro-manage. They welcome the efforts and skills of other team members. If you want to avoid killing growth in your business, organization or even your family, avoid doing these three growth killers. I was blessed to be named a starter on my team and a captain. But what I noticed was that even the individuals that didn't start on the football team, what we called second string, still had to show up to practice. These individuals had to learn all the plays, run just as hard, and had to make all team meetings. Even though they were not starters, they had to prepare just like the starters. During my time as a military soldier, I was taught to always operate two levels above my current rank. To think at the level I wanted to achieve, not at the level I was currently. My philosophy on leadership is that everyone is a leader, the only question is what kind are you. When we talk about leaders, we always contrast it with talking about followers. The two terms become blurred because when you use the term follower, people assume they are not a leader. But everyone is a leader, and a part of being a great leader, is learning how to be a great follower. I don't know if you are familiar with the professional football player Tom Brady or his story. Tom is a three time Super Bowl winner in the National Football League. The beginning of the story didn't seem like it would end like this for Tom. Tom wasn't drafted high and entered the league as a back-up Quarterback. When the starting Quarterback went down, Tom got his opportunity to start and has been the starting Quarterback for the New England Patriots ever since. Tom never saw himself as a back-up, but as a starter waiting for his opportunity. The natural flow of order says someone has to have the lead position. This concept produces structure, focus and direction. Someone has to be in charge in other words. But that doesn't diminish any person's ability, skill or knowledge. So since everyone is a leader, how do we get everyone to become ACTIVE LEADERS. I have a simple acronym I call T.A.S.K. When you create a T.A.S.K Environment, you will produce a winning environment and create ACTIVE LEADERS, because every team needs the second string to be ready to perform as a starter at the drop of a hat. Train Your Team to Lead Create a culture that communicates that everyone is a leader right where they are. That the expectation is for everyone to perform as a leader. Being a leader doesn't mean you make decisions in a vacuum, or act without accountability. Leaders always think and act with the team in mind. Assess Each Team Member I always say inspect what you expect. This means that each team member should know what is expected of them. It should be clearly defined and they should know that this is what there performance evaluation will be based upon. Set Goals that Produce Better Results Help team members set goals that stretch them and produce at a higher level. Give them goals that allow them to make decisions as a front line leader. Teach them to look at situations with different eyes, to step out of themselves and look at situations from a bigger platform. Keep Team Members Focused What derails most people is that they lose focus. The best leaders are leaders that have learned to remain focused on the major goals, the most essential goals of the organization. When you are focused you can cut through all the unnecessary conflicts that may arise in most offices. When you implement T.A.S.K into your leadership, you will produce followers that act as ACTIVE LEADERS. Dr. Will Author, Genius Potential America's #1 Leadership Life Trainer P.S. SMALL BUSINESS INFLUENCER AWARD "Only be you strong, and very courageous, then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success." Joshua 1:7-8 According to this verse in Joshua, there is a reward for courage. If this is true, why is it so difficult for many to walk in courage? Because many times the cost of the reward is great. But isn't that the way life is? There is no victory without a battle, no testimony without a test, and no six-pack without thousands of sit-ups. Over the years of my leadership journey, I have had to make some very tough and difficult decisions. Decisions that would affect my life, my families life and many times others lives as well. Every time I would agonize over whether the decision was right or wrong. Especially when other people were involved. If it were just me and it didn't work out, ok I can survive and move on, but when others are involved, the stakes are a little higher. Since courage is a requirement for being a good leader I had to develop a series of questions for me to answer when courage was needed. Here they are: 1. If a decision is not made, what will be the major consequences? 2. If I fail to make a decision how many people will be affected? 3. Can I live with myself if I don't make a decision? 4. Are you more afraid of the criticism and backlash, then doing the right thing? 5. Have I asked for counsel from trusted others, and they say the decision is the right one? 6. In the midst of not making a decision, our people's lives being affected in a negative way? 7. What does not making a right decision say about you? Tough decisions are hard, if you are in a leadership position and you need to fire someone, that is tough. If you are a business owner needing to take the next step to hire your first employee, that can be a scary task. Maybe you have to tell on a friend or family member that is doing the wrong thing, all these decisions are tough and require courage. Let me share a few things that may assist you in being courageous. 1. The criticism will hurt and be painful, but the inner peace of doing the right thing will help you survive. 2. Surround yourself with those that are closest to you and draw from their strength. 3. Any friendships you loose in the process will serve you well in the future. 4. People may never see you as doing the right thing, but you will know, and that's all that matters. Some of you are a courageous decision away from experiencing the success you desire. SMALL BUSINESS INFLUENCER AWARD "Show me someone who has done something worthwhile, and I’ll show you someone who has overcome adversity." – Lou Holtz Someone else said that adversity test your leadership effectiveness. When I was in the military I can recall many times when I found myself in tough situations. One time in particular I can recall was when our convoy was surrounded by a hostile mob in Kosovo. These insurgents wanted our heads and we were under orders not to fire back, no matter what. Situations like this require you to remain calm, think fast and not to over react. My soldiers that were in the Humvee were scared and ready to fire their weapons. And to be truthful, I was very scared as well. Imagine a 20 year old leading a few 18 year old males and a 23 year old female. Most likely a recipe for disaster in a situation like this. A few things helped my soldiers and I out of this situation. Some tips that will help any leader handle the storms of leadership. #1 Pay Attention to Your Training The military did a great job in training us to handle difficult situations. No training can fully prepare you for every thing you will face as a leader, but training gives you ideas and options to pull from in times of toughness. I know most trainings and trainers are boring, but focus to pull out the necessary tools that will help you. I never imagined I would need the training I was receiving, do to the fact I was not an infantry soldier, but I'm glad I paid attention. #2 Seek Out Counsel When the insurgents surrounded our vehicle, I knew immediately I was in over my head. I made contact with headquarters to seek wisdom. When you are leading, have mentors you can call to seek out wisdom from. Seek out other leaders that have experience and results with success in leading. The Training Operations Control Center (TOCC) was filled with leaders that helped to keep me and everyone else calm. They were able to tell me exactly what to say and do in this situation. #3 Look Calm and Confident My soldiers were looking toward me for confidence. On the inside I was terrified, but I knew for their sake, I had to remain calm. As a leader realize those that are following you look to you for guidance, assurance and knowledge. Because I was able to get the right wisdom from the TOCC, I was able to convey our next moves with confidence, which made everyone in the Humvee confident in spite of our fears. You may not be leading in an actual war zone, although you may feel like that sometimes, implement these tips to strengthen your results as you lead. Dr. Will Moreland Author, Genius Potential America's #1 Leadership Life Trainer Hope you are ready for a great week. Just wanted to share some ideas that may help jump start your week. Just something to think about on your way to work or at lunch today. I have worked with and studied successful people from all types of backgrounds and professions and what I have found was the turning point in their life, can be narrowed down to four things: #1 Disgust They simply became disgusted at the results they were getting in life. Disgust is a negative emotion with a positive effect, if used to fuel the flame of passion. These people were not just simply upset, frustrated or mad, they were disgusted. They were tired of crying, feeling bad for themselves, tired of complaining that life wasn't fair. They became disgusted. #2 Decision That disgust lead them to make an all important decision. The decision to change their life. To take back the power in their life. They found out, that when you blame society, the government, the economy or anyone else, you give up your power to change your life. #3 Desire These people became consumed with a desire to live a better life. They started to agree with that small voice on the inside of them, telling them that there was more. That a higher quality of life was available. #4 Determination Successful people have a determination that doesn't allow them to give up. That feeling of disgust stands as a constant reminder to keep pushing forward. Determination is a promise to yourself, not to give up. If you really want to change your life, you can. Nothing else has to change except YOU! Here's to you having a great week and making that CHANGE!!!
