"When a match has equal partners then I fear not."
Aeschylus

In 2014 one of your best moves will be to align yourself with the "RIGHT" partners. Think about some of the blind spots or opportunities you have had in the past and look to find strategic partners that can close the gap.

When I look for new partners, I'm looking for a few significant things. Because at the end of the day, you will have to work with this person or company. Life is too short to be around people you don't like and doing work you don't love. I suggest you create you a "Can I Work With You List."

Here is my "Can I Work With You List"

1. I must like you...PERIOD!!!

2. You must have PROVEN RESULTS!!!

3. I must see a way I can SERVE you!!!

4. The project has to be FUN!!!

5. The project has to have MEANING!!!

Partnerships can be an amazing way to grow your business and enter into new arenas, just remember to partner with the "RIGHT" individual or company.

What are some red flags for partnerships for you? Who makes a great partner in your eyes?

I Failed Already in 2014

"My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure."
Abraham Lincoln
(Photo:New York Times)

Well we are four days into the New Year and I failed already!!!

This past week I have been in California conducting some training and now I’m sitting in my hotel room reviewing my weekly goal sheet. As I was giving each area a grade, I got to the part about health and fitness and had to give myself an F grade. I haven’t worked out the whole time here in California. To be VERY HONEST, I didn’t even plan to. When I left Arizona I left my workout clothes at home on purpose. I made the excuse that I didn’t want to carry extra stuff.

How about you? Have you failed in areas you said you were going to succeed in already this year? Maybe you like me said you were going to workout more, maybe start reading each day.

That’s why it is so important to do weekly checks so we can identify when we are off the track. As I was sitting here writing down why I failed this week in the area of fitness I realized that I failed even before I got started. I went back to when I was packing my bag and remember all the excuses I was telling myself. “You are not going to have time; you don’t want to carry all that stuff, excuse after excuse.

So as I writing down the solution part on my goal sheet, I thought about some techniques that could help you and I achieve our goals.

#1 Have a CLEAR blueprint how you will achieve your goal. I simply didn’t plan out when I was going to workout during my trip. Because I didn’t plan it, I didn’t do it. When you write down a clear plan you will be ahead of the game.

#2 Train yourself to CHALLENGE all negative or limiting thoughts. I gave in to the thoughts about not having time and my back being to heavy. The truth is my body wants to reject this new life style, so I must challenge it quickly and remember my why.

#3 CHECK your results often. If you see yourself allowing yourself to slip up on your goals, you will be off track. I could actually see where this type of thinking was leading me. I could see myself getting back home and telling myself on Monday, take it easy you just got home, and take a few days off. Before you know it, a month goes by.

#4 When you see you are off track CORRECT the negative behavior fast. So I decided not having my workout clothes was not a reason not to workout. I look around my hotel room to see what exercises I could to. This is how you challenge the negative and limiting behavior. Take action to get back on track.

#5 CANCEL your subscription to excuseville.  In 2014 we are not making and accepting excuses from ourselves, you know it and I know it, we are far better than our excuses, don’t allow a limiting power to defeat you.

I’m committed to winning big in 2014 and I know you are as well. I hope these few techniques help you achieve your goals.

Remember to do something exciting this weekend!!!

The 37 Lessons I Learned in 2013
By Dr. Will Moreland
Bestselling Author of Genius Potential

This past year has just been phenomenal for me and I hope for you as well. I have grown, matured and developed in major ways. I always like to take time to reflect and examine on what I have learned. Below is a list of ideas and philosophies that have helped me grow over this last year.

I’m charged up and ready to help you make 2014 your best year ever… These 37 lessons will help you set up a great foundation for 2014.

In 2014 I want you to be 100% in FOCUS mode. You know what FOCUS means:

“Fixed On Continued Unique Significance”

You know I think you are a GENIUS, now I want you to ACT on it!!!

Let’s rock 2014!!! Here are the 37 things 2013 taught me…

  1. Family is first. Never have things that compete with your family. When you are at work, work, but when you get home, be home!!!
  2. Having high quality mentors is not an option. They will prove to be your success secret.
  3. Your success rate increases when you focus on your genius potential.
  4. Life is going to happen. You can’t avoid the changes in life, you can only prepare for the changes. Change will happen, don’t try to stop it, be ready for it.
  5. Trying to be perfect will hinder your progress. Desire to produce genius level work, offer excellence, but don’t try to be perfect, it’s not possible.
  6. Learn to be a person that practices gratitude on a daily basis. Say thank you more. Give more, it doesn’t have to be any thing big, a small note has big returns.
  7. Surround yourself with the best people possible and lesson to them. Whether in business or life. Listen to the experts in your life.
  8. Commit to reading everyday. It will expand your mind, view, vision and conversation.
  9. Happiness is a CHOICE!
  10. What gets plan gets done. When you don’t have a plan, you actually do have a plan, it’s called failing.
  11. Love your parents. Respect your children and their ideas.
  12. Dreaming is free, so dream BIG. Take the limits off your dreams. Believe that the resources to accomplish any dream are in your reach.
  13. Taking time to meditate is a key component to putting yourself in the genius zone.
  14. Don’t measure your success by what you have done, measure it by what you can still do.
  15. Get in shape.
  16. Vacation 4 times a year. These don’t have to be get on a plane type of vacations, but I’m sure there are places right in your state you have never been to.
  17. Never trade your happiness for anything.
  18. Invest in yourself, your business and your family. I made huge investments in all three areas this year and the ROI has been awesome.
  19. As a leader, remember people are your #1 asset, NOT products!!!
  20. Write in your journal often, and reflect on the lessons that life are teaching you.
  21. Stop and smell the roses. Celebrate each win and victory.
  22. At some point when all the data is in, the research has been done, YOU just have to take a leap of faith.
  23. Make plans to live the rest of your life on your terms.
  24. Look for opportunities to fill a need, to fix a problem and you will find wealth.
  25. Set goals that stretch, scare and set you a part from the crowd.
  26. Take 100% responsibility for your success, failures, happiness, health and finances.
  27. You will accomplish genus level results when you have clearly written out goals.
  28. Genius Leaders know how to Connect, Care, Communicate, Challenge, Correct and Congratulate their teams.
  29. The opposite of success is not failure, it’s quitting.
  30. Understand your value before you enter the market place. If you settle for less, they will pay you less.
  31. Ken Blanchard author of the One Minute Manager told me that Leaders that are insecure hide behind power.
  32. Stedman Graham, most known for his relationship with Oprah, told me not to allow anyone to put me in a box.
  33. Have a vision beyond your circumstances.
  34. I learned from the life of Nelson Mandela how to be committed to your mission.
  35. One of the best quotes I read this year “You can have anything in the world, if you are CLEAR on what you want.”
  36. Get a picture of your future self and develop into that person.
  37. Be true to yourself.

I hope these 37 lessons help you set an amazing course for 2014. Let’s challenge each other to be our best in this coming year!!!

Dare to ACT On Your Dreams Part 3

I first learned about Reginald Lewis when I was deployed to Bosnia while serving in the Army. I was inspired, motivated and upset all at the same time when I read his book.

I kept wondering, how was it that I had never heard of Reginald Lewis, the first African-American to purchase a billion dollar business.

When we talk about acting on your dreams, Reginald Lewis could not go without a mention. When Reginald Lewis died in January 1993, the world became void of a true dreamer.

Starting from humble beginnings in Baltimore, Maryland, Reginald Lewis defied the odds to become the richest African-American in the 1980's. In his book Why Should White Guys Have All the Fun he talks about his shear determination to become successful in life and business. Reginald Lewis began his career as a corporate attorney, before starting his own company TLC Group, a venture capital firm.

Reginald Lewis genius was found in his ability to turn-around companies and bring in major profits to investors. But his ultimate legacy and what really sealed him as the brilliant business man he was, is when he negotiated the purchase of Beatrice International Foods from Beatrice Companies for $985 million. When TLC Beatrice reported revenue of $1.8 billion in 1987, it became the first black-owned company to have more than $1 billion in annual sales.

What can we learn from Reginald Lewis?

    1. It doesn't matter where you start from, you can finish on top.
    2. Persistence and dedication pays off in the long run.
    3. Act on your biggest dreams.

Reginald Lewis leaves us a legacy of inspiration to act on our dreams.

Challenges:It's A Part of Life!!!

Have you ever purchased a brand new car? There are some things that come standard when you buy a new car, some features come with the car. The same is true with life. Challenges come standard with life. There would be no good, without bad, no hope without crissis, it's life.

You don't have to ask for challenges, look for them or do anything to attract them, they will show up regardless. So wisdom says, those that desire to be successful in life, don't try to avoid challenges but rather they prepare for them.

Each of us that own a car usually get insurance to cover any damages in case of an accident. Not that you want to have an accident, but because there is a possibility of one and you want to be prepared. You must learn to do the same in every area of your life.

There are 3 key areas that you need to have insurance in, or what I call added support in time of challenges.

1. Friend Insurance.
2. Financial Insurance.
3. Mental Insurance.

Having the right friends in your corner when challenges come will greatly aid you in getting over the obstacles. The worse feeling in the world is going through challenges and feeling all alone. Examine your life and see if you have "Friend Insurance." People you can count on in challenging times.

I know this seems like an almost impossible area to feel strong in, "Financial Insurance." But ask yourself the question, "if I needed $500-$5000 for a challenge where would I turn." Begin to put a blueprint in place to answer this question. Whether from a family member, friend or bank, know in advance where you would turn.

Lastly, "Mental Insurance" is probaly the most important type of insurance you can have. Many people never seem to resolve problems becauase they cannot THINK clearly in times of challenges. Developing your mind with good information and resources before challenges hit, will allow you to operate and function much better. To call 911 in time of trouble as been rehearsed over and over in our minds, that's what will happen when you develop your mind. It will allow you to think solutions instead of worrying.

Implement these 3 keys in your life to help overcome any challenges you will face in life.

IS IT TIME TO MAKE A TRADE?

I don't know about you, but I'm glad the NBA lock out is over. As the season approaches, teams that are SERIOUS about contending for the championship are making some major personnel moves that will position them to compete. My favorite team, the Los Angeles Lakers, recently made a major trade.  They dealt "Fan Favorite" Lamar Odom to the Houston Rockets. I believe this is a move that will put them in position to sign Dwight Howard. Can you say a championship move?

A new year is right around the corner, are you making the right moves? Have you done an assessment of your life, business, team and power players? Just as every serious team is making moves to win, so do you and I. Let me share 5 key traits winners do each year.

    1. They assess last years performance
    2. They are honest about their results
    3. They take responsibility for their results
    4. They don't follow popular opinion
    5. They make the necessary adjustments

Follow this simple but yet profound blue print to ensure 2012 is a championship year for you.

ARE YOU GROWING?

If you are reading this blog, then I am almost certain of two things, number one, you have an interest in leadership or personal development and number two, reading my blogs is a part of your growth process. Hopefully I am right on both accounts. Each week I talk with leaders and organizations and help them develop strategic leadership programs for themselves and their companies. These individuals and companies understand that growth, and not just any growth, but proper growth is essential for lasting success.

But I also come across individuals and companies that have no process for growth, no inbuilt system that allows them to naturally grow. When I was in the Army, we would conduct mandatory training in a wide range of areas, sexual harassment, diversity, social awareness training, all types of training. This training was attended by everyone from the top down. This ensured that everyone in the organization was receiving current and up to date information that would allow the organization to run more efficiently.

In your leadership do you have a natural process for growth. Maybe it is reading a leadership book once a month, or attending leadership seminars. Maybe you are a part of some social media leadership groups. As a leader, growth it is not an option, you must be intentional about proper growth.

I see far too many people in positions of leadership, but they are not growing. See, what got you that promotion is not enough to keep you relevant. Just like we have to update our operating systems on our computers, the same is true for our leadership. A lot of leaders are stuck doing things in an outdated way, because they don't have a natural process for growth.

Let me share with you a few things that will ensure you continue to grow.

    1. Always remember it can be done better, then it is being done now
    2. Have a system in place for natural growth (attending a yearly leadership conference)
    3. Stay around fresh and innovative people
    4. Ask others for an HONEST assessment of your leadership
    5. Don't be a KNOW it all

Evaluate yourself against this list and see if you are in position for natural growth.

Remember,

THINK BETTER, LIVE BETTER!!!
