Last night I attended a high school basketball game. My friend's son was playing in the game, so I went to support. At the beginning of the fourth quarter they were down by 20 points. As I looked at the faces of the young men on that court, their faces told a story of defeat, even though there was still eight minutes to be played, they doubted they had a chance to win. I couldn't help myself, I moved to the front row and begin to scream to each player to keep their heads in the game. As the referee blew the whistle to start the fourth, I started on the minds of those young men.
I told one kid, get ready, your opportunity to be big is coming, I told another kid, play big and smart. The score was 51-31, the crowd that was looking at me weird at the beginning started to see the body language of the players change. The crowd started to get involved. One lady turned to me and said "keep talking, because that coach sure doesn't have anything to say." See doubt is a paralyzing thing, the dictionary defines it as to consider unlikely, hard to believe and mistrust. When doubt is present, your confidence will be sapped. Many have failed to take the next step, to start a business or go back to school because an element of doubt was present. As I began to shout at each of those young men, something really begin to happen. They started playing harder and smarter. The turn overs that plagued them in the first three quarters were gone. With each shot made, their confidence grew. With four minutes to go, the score was 51-42, the atmosphere was electric. People where given high fives to each other, the young men were constantly looking toward me for words of encouragement. It was an awesome feeling. Before we knew it, the score was 54-51 with a minute to go. The other team made two free throws, 56-51. I looked #10 in the eyes, I said your moment is coming, be ready. Fifteen seconds left, #10 shoots a three pointer, he misses. BUT wait, there is a foul on the play. He goes to the line to shoot three free throws. First one, SWISH!! Second one, same thing. The third one looks short, barely rims in. The other team takes the ball down the court, the pressure defense is on. The score is 56-54. They turn the ball over with nine seconds remaining. Several players look over at me, I point to my head, PLAY SMART. The ball is being passed around, it's loose on the ground, time expires. Final score 56-54. The score board said they lost, but on this night, the Basha Junior Varsity Basketball team won. Because they learned, not to look at the score, just play the game with confidence. Several years ago I was hit with an internal question that shook my core being. As I was driving down the street in my nice suit and luxury car, the question that came to me was this "Can it transfer to the next generation?" For me the question was clear, would my present day success mean anything for my daughter. Had I properly set her up for success, or if I died would her struggle begin. While she was living a life I could only dream of as a child, the question remained, was she set up for her own personal success. The more I thought about the question, it lead me to think about my entire life and the success that I had achieved up until that time. It made me think, is my success helping others, I mean really helping others. I am a business man, so I understand that you provide a product to the consumer with excellent service and they in return exchange their money, and you make a profit. But beyond that, I wanted to know, if their contact with me made a difference. For as long as I could remember, I wanted to be successful, I think deep down all of us do. But I want to challenge you to go beyond success to significance. Success deals more on a personal level, more so what it can do for you, where significance is your impact on others. Success should be the platform that allows you to be significant. That question challenged me that day and continues to challenge me today, if you have ever heard me speak or just speak to me for five minutes, you will hear the word legacy come from me several times. Life really is about what you give back while you are living and what you leave when you die. When I changed my focus to being more significant, than successful, I became more successful. I believe the same thing will happen for you, when you impact one person, you are really impacting a generation. Zig Ziglar said it best, "When you help enough people become a success, you will be a success." Remember, Think Better, Live Better P.S. Hopefully I am right on both accounts. Each week I talk with leaders and organizations and help them develop strategic leadership programs for themselves and their companies. These individuals and companies understand that growth, and not just any growth, but proper growth is essential for lasting success.
But I also come across individuals and companies that have no process for growth, no inbuilt system that allows them to naturally grow. When I was in the Army, we would conduct mandatory training in a wide range of areas, sexual harassment, diversity, social awareness training, all types of training. This training was attended by everyone from the top down. This ensured that everyone in the organization was receiving current and up to date information that would allow the organization to run more efficiently. In your leadership do you have a natural process for growth. Maybe it is reading a leadership book once a month, or attending leadership seminars. Maybe you are a part of some social media leadership groups. As a leader, growth it is not an option, you must be intentional about proper growth. I see far too many people in positions of leadership, but they are not growing. See, what got you that promotion is not enough to keep you relevant. Just like we have to update our operating systems on our computers, the same is true for our leadership. A lot of leaders are stuck doing things in an outdated way, because they don't have a natural process for growth. Let me share with you a few things that will ensure you continue to grow. 1. Always remember it can be done better, then it is being done now 2. Have a system in place for natural growth (attending a yearly leadership conference) 3. Stay around fresh and innovative people 4. Ask others for an HONEST assessment of your leadership 5. Don't be a KNOW it all Evaluate yourself against this list and see if you are in position for natural growth. Remember, THINK BETTER, LIVE BETTER!!! I was the one that most people thought would end up on a path full of trouble, and I gave them ever reason to think so. Bitter because I didn't have a male role model, nor the best living accommodations growing up in Compton, California. Mad because I didn't understand the beauty of my dark skin, so the constant teasing and name calling made me angry and troublesome. So I decided to use all of these obstacles as reasons to cheat myself out of my destiny and purpose in life.
Twenty years ago I was headed down the path to be that one you usually hear about, troubled teen, gang banger, in and out of jail, single parent home, you know that one. BUT, fifteen years ago, I DECIDED to "BE THE ONE", that you probably rarely hear about. The focused, determined, will not quit, will not make excuses, will live from my genius potential person. So now at 35 years of age, that young man that was destined for a life full of disappointments, can honestly say to anyone, you can make the decision to "BE THE ONE." Now to "BE THE ONE" is no walk in the park, don't let anyone fool you, but it is possible. You may be asking, what exactly do I mean when I say "BE THE ONE." I'm talking about allowing yourself to live your best life, waking up everyday with a smile on your face and not a frown. Enjoying every ounce of like inspite of the challenges you may face. Any one can make, find or create an excuse to live beneath their potential, but when you decide to "BE THE ONE" you are living life at full throttle. You are living from your Genius Potential! Let me share just a few things that will help you "BE THE ONE." 1. Make a decision that your life is worth you giving your best 2. Develop a strong mental picture of you achieving great things in your passion area 3. Separate from toxic people in your life 4. Change the places you go, only go to places that lead you to becoming the person you want to be 5. Live by new principles, principles that require you to be, do and give your best 6. Slap fear in the face, because he is no match for you 7. Take ACTION now, focus on what you can do, what you do have and multiply it These seven keys will provide a strong foundation for you to "BE THE ONE." Remember, Think Better, Live Better I'm amazed at how people make the choice to "Do It Themselves." I consult with countless people who are tired and ready to quit because they feel overwhelmed by the task they need to perform for their businesses to function each day. One of the first questions I ask when I meet with someone is to ask them "What do you think you need to be successful?" I always get a variety of answers, some say more staff, more money, or more resources. But in most cases, they are lacking a workable system. Many small businesses and entrepreneurs feel they have to continue to do EVERYTHING by themselves.
We are living at one of the greatest times known to mankind, with technology, social media and people resources all around us. Man, I am loving this time. When you stop and think about the resources we have literally at our finger tips, you have more resources than you can handle. So my question today is, "Are You Taking Advantage of Your Resources?" Have you taken the time to ask yourself what do I really need for my business, life or family to function better. Then take a serious look around you, the ANSWER is there. I am always blown away when I do a Google search, how many other people had the same question as I did, and how many answers are waiting for me. The "Law of Receiving" says ask and you shall receive, but many fail to ask for the help or assistance they need. For some reason, we feel like asking diminishes our knowledge base in our given field. My area of expertise is in leadership and personal development, I never feel I need to be a computer expert, or any other expert. I love to dress and put unique outfits together, so I'm always on the look out for an outstanding color combo. I usually will turn to fashion expert Alex Ellis of Simply Ellis. I will go to his website or Facebook page and look at what he is wearing. I have even called him to ask him a few questions on occasion. When I am on Facebook, there are two groups I turn to for expert advice, Social Media Swag and But I Don't Want a Real Job, the information from the experts in these groups are always on point. People are looking to share their expert advice with you. I mean there is all kinds of help out there, ASK FOR IT! Let me close by sharing a few of my power team players, I will share more in the future. I encourage you to share with me and others some of your power team players, who do you glean from. Add them in the comment area of this blog. POWER TEAM PLAYERS: 1. Dr. Vernet Joseph (Motivation and Inspiration) 2. Dr. DeJarra Sims (Health Care) 3. Pam Perry (PR and Social Media Expert) 4. The more I thought about the Wright Brothers and their pursuit of flight, Thomas Edison journey for the light bulb, or Berry Gordy's Motown Sound, I looked for clues that lead to their success. Then I asked my wife what she thought, and she simply said "Liberty. And I turned and said yes, that's it "When liberty is present, innovation is achieved."
When you stop and think about the inventions, innovations and ideas that have come from within America, it will literally astonish you. Thinking about all the great thinkers of history, Aristotle, Plato and Socrates and the like, none of them thought about the light bulb or flying. Now think about the individuals that have changed the world with their ideas. Steve Jobs and the iPhone, Henry Ford, William E. Boeing, Mary Kay Ash and so many others, the list goes own. What produced all these great ideas and innovations? Each of these individuals operated in an environment that allowed freedom to dream as big as you want. America is coined as the "Land of Opportunity." What that really means is that you have the opportunity to dream big. As a leader, you have the opportunity to create atmospheres for your team remembers to release the genius on the inside of them. As long as you have the liberty to think, you have the potential to change the wo |
