My birthday weekend was great. I invested it with family, friends and new friends. To top it off, I just released my new book, GENIUS POTENTIAL. The partying, the love, the food was all great, but what really stood out to me was the response I received from my family and friends. I asked them to all help me push the launch of my new book. I knew I could reach more, with more people on the team.
Anyone that experiences success, never does it in a vacuum, SUCCESS IS A TEAM SPORT! Over the last couple of weeks I have been asking my family and friends to help me spread the word about GENIUS POTENTIAL. Whether is was sending an email, tweeting, facebooking or just talking about the book, so many people pitched in to help. Would they have done it, without me asking? I'm not sure, hopefully the people in my life feel I add value to people's lives and this book project would be another tool to add to someone's personal development tool box. But I wanted to guarantee my success, so I used those three powerful letters, A.S.K! Over the years I have learned the power of asking for help. I know many people don't like to ask for help, but you are missing out on a WEALTH of knowledge. See, when you ASK, what you are really doing is "Always Seeking Knowledge." Once I sent the email out asking for help, so much knowledge came back to me. One person said "Will have you thought about contacting this person." Another person sent me a video about book promotions. The help I received was overwhelming. I want to encourage you to ASK! Don't go the journey alone, what ever situation you may be facing right now, even if you feel you have it all figured out, still ASK for help, you never know what you may learn in the process. This weekend reenforced for me the power of ASKING! Think Better, Live Better, Dr. Will Author, Genius Potential P.S. Everyone always ask me, how did I go from an at risk youth to one of America's leading voices on leadership, the answer is in GENIUS POTENTIAL! When you order your copy you will receive a free e-book "Think Better, Live Better 52 Weeks of Affirmations." Plus additional bonus material. So today I am doing something that I rarely do. I know it's a bad habit that I am working to break, but I rarely stop to reflect how far I have come since growing up in Compton, California. If all goes according to my desires, I will turn 36 on tomorrow. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy life to the fullest, I hear my friends saying "see we told you, you work too hard." But as I always tell them, I don't consider what I do work, I truly wake up each day excited about helping people succeed in life.
But today, I am sitting in my office, reflecting on this kid from Compton, who many thought wouldn't make it to his 18th birthday. As a get ready for part two of my life, I am truly excited; these first 35 years have been mixed with test, trials and triumphs. The journey, every bit of it has been worth it and I have learned from everything. My Grandmother, who died when I was 13, was one of my biggest supporters. When people would say that I wasn't worth anything, she always encouraged me and told me I was special. One of her biggest dreams for me was for her to be able to take me on an airplane ride. She died before she was able to, but I'm looking at my passport with stamps from over 25 countries on it and can't believe it. Growing up, one of my sole purposes was to make my Grandma proud of me. I wasn't quite sure how I would do it. When ever I would get into trouble, which was almost everyday, Grandma would always look at me with those soft brown eyes and say "Willard, you know better right?" I remember the last conversation I had with my Grandmother, as she lay in the hospital, telling me "I am ready." I looked back at her and said "Ok Grandma" A few days later, Grandma passed the torch to the next generation. As I sit here, I am so grateful and thankful for ALL that God has allowed me to experience. I'm ready for this new chapter. I want to thank everyone that has been a part of my life this first 35 years. Let's make the next 35 years GENIUS! Think Better, Live Better, Dr. Will Author, Genius Potential P.S. If you find value from my blog, please post a comment or share it with a friend! Over the last decade, I have had the opportunity to work with and lead some amazing people. Whether it was in the Army, Department of Defense or the Non- Profit organizations that I have been a part of, I have learned a common thread to getting the most out of my teams.
For the most part, I haven't met too many people that don't want to to a good job at work. Giving your best has to be an individual desire, but I think leaders can help out tremendously in motivating their teams to come to work ready to give their best every day. I have used the ACE Principle over the years with much success and I have seen the results in the lives of my team members. They are excited about coming to work, they look forward to accomplishing the mission and they easily buy into the overall vision. If you want your team to give you the best effort, implement the ACE Principle and see how they respond. The ACE Principle is a three part process that will change the culture of your company or organization. The first principle is APPRECIATE every team player. I mean from the Door Man to the Top Executive. Every person wants to know that their contribution to the team matters. As a leader you need to recognize this and ensure that everyone is APPRECIATED. It doesn't take much to make this very important acknowledgement. Whether you mention a person's name in a meeting, company newsletter, or placing a small card on their desk, APPRECIATION goes far. The next principle is CHALLENGE the team. I think people enjoy a good challenge in a controlled environment. What I mean by this is that you push your team to go the extra mile. Take some risk. The daily routine can become mundane and individuals can loose focus. When I worked in banking, each week we were giving a weekly challenge, this kept us alert and ready to perform at a high level. Challenge your team to always do better, never be satisfied with the status qua. Doing this will keep your team in an innovative zone. The last principle is to EQUIP your team with the best information, technology and people resources. Even if you are a smaller company, do every thing you can to give your team the best. Acknowledge that you know they may not have the best at the present, but you are aware and APPRECIATE that they are making it work. But when possible, EQUIP your team with the best. Bring in the best trainers, expose them to the latest information in your industry. Making this type of investment in your team will show them you value them and respect their professionalism. When you implement the ACE Principle into your leadership and spread it throughout your company or organization, you will see the positive results. |
