A little while ago I was having a discussion in one of the Facebook groups I'm a part of, and the topic of life balance came up. Everyone was giving their input and sharing their insight on the topic. Then I read one reply from my friend Felicia Davis, she said she didn't try to create balance, but harmony. For me this was a great mental shift and a welcomed change of view on the matter.
I love to study words, so I had to look up the definition of both words, balance and harmony. And sure enough, harmony was what I wanted, but balance was what I was pursuing. The definition for balance is a state of equilibrium; equal distribution of weight, amount, time, etc. Harmony means agreement; accord; harmonious relations. That's what I wanted, my life to have harmonious relations. Isn't that what we all want, for our families, career, goals and lifestyle to all work together and not compete with each other. This simple change of word usage gave me a different perspective on the matter. I really began to focus on the word "agreement." There is a scripture that says "How can two walk together, unless they agree." So in all my relationships I started to look for agreement, not balance. Let me give you a quick example. My daughter Karah is 9 years old and very active in school events. At least once a month, she had some activity at her school. We sat down and looked over her schedule and we agreed on the events that she really would like for me to attend. Armed with this knowledge, I was able to structure my schedule to come in harmony with my daughter's events. Let me share some great tips for creating harmony: 1. Decide what is important to you. 2. Communicate often with the most important people in your life. 3. Create a schedule that produces harmony. 4. Understand that you can't be everywhere. 5. Ask for help, when you see scheduling conflicts. What action step/s can you take today to create harmony in your life. In my book the "9 Practices to Guarantee a Great Day" I give a simple blue print for creating life harmony, you can download it for free.
